George Houser Virtual House Party on July 24th
Friday, July 24, 2020 @ 7:00 PM
You are invited to a “Virtual Book Party” for sneak preview of Sheila D. Colllins’ new book “UBUNTU: George M. Houser and the Struggle for Peace and Freedom on Two Continents” and learn the meaning of UBUNTU.
Author Sheila Collins will discuss the historical influences on Houser’s life and his dedication to the networking that bridged cultures and two continents. Houser co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1942 with James Farmer and Bernice Fisher in 1942. With Bayard Rustin,he co-led the 1947 Journey of Reconciliation to the South which became the model for the 1960’s Freedom Rides. With other activists, he initiated the American Committee on Africa (ACOA) and made over 30 trips to Africa to support independence movements. He was a key player in laying the groundwork to end racial segregation in the United States, colonialism in Africa and apartheid in South Africa.
George Houser’s history as an ally of the black liberation movements from the 1940’s until his death, at age 99, in 2015, is a teachable moment for today.
Ms. Collins will be joined by her activist husband Rev. John Collins and long-time Westchester County civil rights and peace activist Joanne Robinson.
Current members of Peace Action New York State receive a special discounted ticket price, and all attendees become a Peace Action New York State member with the purchase of a ticket.
Frances Perkins Virtual House Party on May 29
On Friday evening, 7pm-8:30pm, May 29, there will be Frances Perkins Virtual House Party to celebrate the inspiring legacy of the first woman in the U.S. Cabinet. As FDR’s Secretary of Labor from 1933-1945, she brought us social security, minimum wage, unemployment compensation and more. We could use more of those kind of big changes now!
We are hoping that House Party attendees will take the time (at their leisure) to view filmmaker Mick Caouette’s wonderful one-hour documentary – “Summoned: Frances Perkins and the General Welfare.” As an attendee, you will receive instructions on how to view the film and also support the work of Peace Action New York State. Then, on May 29th, you are invited to join the Virtual House Party for a lively discussion with filmmaker Mick Caouette, Blanche Wiesen Cook (Eleanor Roosevelt’s biographer), and renowned labor historian and Columbia Professor Alice Kessler Harris.
Current members of Peace Action New York State receive a special discounted ticket price. We also welcome new members. If you are not a member yet, you become a Peace Action New York State member with the purchase of a ticket. Click here to get your ticket!

Memorial Day, A Time to Remember and Mourn
Statement of LI Alliance for Memorial Day 2014
Margaret Melkonian, Executive Director, LI Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives, 516-741-4360
Memorial Day, A Time to Remember and to Mourn the Victims of War
Since the end of the Civil War, the American people have dedicated Memorial Day as a time to mourn the victims of war. It has become a nationwide day of remembrance and reconciliation.
On May 24th, on the tenth Pax Christi LI’s Memorial Day Vigil, Long Islanders will gather at Jones Beach for a solemn march remembering and grieving for all those lost and wounded in wars.
This is a stark alternative to the Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s Air Show. It is regrettable that Bethpage Federal Credit Union and other sponsors have transformed this sacred day of mourning into a demonstration of military machinery and a vehicle for recruitment. The solemn peace march, in contrast, seeks to draw in persons no matter what their politics, by calling on our common humanity in an act of remembrance and mourning.
Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the consequences of war, to commit ourselves to end the cycle of violence, and to the return all those in harm’s way to their loved ones. Memorial Day is a sacred day of loss and remembrance and hope for a world without war. It is not the beginning of summer, a day for sales and for military demonstrations. Memorial Day is a sacred day.
The LI Alliance and LI peace partners call on Bethpage Federal Credit Union and other sponsors and also the NYS Parks Commission to forego military demonstrations at Jones Beach in the future. Instead, we ask them to remember why we grieve as a LI community on Memorial Day for all those lives lost in wars and why we hold close all those who we could not bear to lose.
