You are invited to a “Virtual Book Party” for sneak preview of Sheila D. Colllins’ new book “UBUNTU: George M. Houser and the Struggle for Peace and Freedom on Two Continents” and learn the meaning of UBUNTU.
Author Sheila Collins will discuss the historical influences on Houser’s life and his dedication to the networking that bridged cultures and two continents. Houser co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1942 with James Farmer and Bernice Fisher in 1942. With Bayard Rustin,he co-led the 1947 Journey of Reconciliation to the South which became the model for the 1960’s Freedom Rides. With other activists, he initiated the American Committee on Africa (ACOA) and made over 30 trips to Africa to support independence movements. He was a key player in laying the groundwork to end racial segregation in the United States, colonialism in Africa and apartheid in South Africa.
George Houser’s history as an ally of the black liberation movements from the 1940’s until his death, at age 99, in 2015, is a teachable moment for today.
Ms. Collins will be joined by her activist husband Rev. John Collins and long-time Westchester County civil rights and peace activist Joanne Robinson.
